Formica is a brand name like Wilson Art - Nevamar - Pionite - Arborite
-etc. We refer here to all of the Brands as MICA
MICA is a High Pressure Laminate. There is also a Low Pressure Laminate used for foils. Common uses for foil are
cabinet doors, so called Foil Doors, Crown Mouldings etc.
MICA comes in three different thicknesses:
1/32 inch thick MICA
Comes in 4 foot by 8 foot sheets.
Used for cabinets, furnitures, shelving etc.
1/16 inch thick Mica
Comes in 4x8 and 5x12 sheets.
Used for Kitchen countertops, Toilet partitions, Wall panelling etc. It is also used where you want to eliminate seams.
This is often possible thanks to it's larger size in Width and in Length.
MICA comes in different finishes, colors and patterns
Finishes are: Textured finish, Slate finish, Artisian finish, Gloss finish, High Definition Finish, Radiant finish. Slate or
Sculpterd finish and many more finishes.
There is also a Postforming grade of MICA.
This MICA's thickness is between 1/32 and 1/16 inches.
It is mostly used for post formed countertops which were once very popular. Postformed tops have a rounded front edge and a integrated backsplash. But when a wall is not straight, you have
no way to adjust it because of the integrated backsplash.
Besides it needs big equipment to produce Postformed countertops. Today they
are hardly used anymore. Marble countertops have replaced them
All Wilson Art Brand 1/16 MICA is only stocked in Postforming grade from
But 5x12 sheets in Postforming grade are harder to handle. They are much more prone to breakage than regular 1/16 or heavy Mica.
Wilson Art has been the only Company making that switch, as far as we know.
The back or underside of MICA is very prone to water damage
before it is
bonded to a substrate. After it is bonded, the surface is just about waterproof
MICA bends in two directions, but only in one direction at the same time.
You will get pressure cracks if you don't pay attention
MICA is also available in metal - real metal, stainless steel, chrome,
brass and aluminum
Metal MICA by CHEMETAL is well known. Also other Metal Micas are on the market.
CHEMETAL makes finishes like Brushed finish - Anodized finish -
Oxidized finish - Gloss finish and different patterns
A Magnetic MICA by CHEMETAL is also available. It can be cut up and used for Magnetic Bulletin Boards.
